Last Style Chapters

My dears, we're almost finished, I haven't that much left for you about style... I think we can say that the theorical part is over.
So I thought that a general review of how you can apply all those blabblings I wrote, possibly in a concrete example, wouldn't be that bad.
I'll be my own guinea pig to be able to indulge in a little bit of narcissism, talking about me :P

Let's start from shapes: a rectangle, when I feel better I see myself like a minimalist hourglass... Colours: I'm definately "winter", but since it's some years that I've developed this crush on "peacock green" I want to increase the "green" amount (any pretty shade) in my wardrobe... but also pastel pink and chocolate brown, don't ask me why, I just feel like I like them! Personal style definition? Labyrinthic tea (but it's changing... like all good labyrinths do :P).
There are things that I like exaclty as they are, since I was little (loads of rings on my hands, flared/bell jeans, mary janes) but it's only three, I've changed my mind a lot!
I don't want any more turtle necks, so I've invested in some decorated ribbons to cut and improve my tshirts (and get rid of monochrome too, booooooring!). To my aunt's joy I'm also stepping of my "all-black period" (it lasted something like 11 years, I feel old!). I'm not ditching low rise flared trousers, I still own no button shirts (nor I'm planning to), stripes are taking over the entire wardrobe (and this is good), I remember to use things like earrings and bracelets more often... well, as you can see it's not a big deal, I can tell you that there aren't huge revolutions, but more precise choices... after the beta test we're ready to launch Euforilla 2.0 :P

To avoid closing a serie of style posts that has been running on for almost three months, I saved for you five more posts that I hope you'll find interesting, I'll have a really good time writing them! We'll talk about vintage, styles I love and/or keep as an inspiration (so that you can have a clear idea of what I meant by "taking inspiration" from other things), subcultures and history of fabrics.
I feel smart U_U

A little sum up of what we've seen till today:

7 good reasons to choose Ubuntu (Linux for human beings)

img courtesy of google images

Why go for free informatics?
Generally, if the reason is good enough, you need only one.
But this is the case where you have seven reasons, and they're all good!

1) It's free. And it'll always be. And I'm not talking only about the Operative System, but also about all the softwares and plugins you may ever need. Plus by purchasing a PC without an OS already on it, you'll save big money!

2) I'ts easy. Insert your CD with your favourite little animal and in half an hour, and I mean 30 minutes counted, you'll have a new OS, that has found all the drivers it needed, internet, and already cleaned up after his own installation mess. Plus here you can find everything you may need.

3) It's smart. 30 seconds timed to switch on and be actually usable (no hourglass on your screen that'll make you wait enough time to prepare a 12 courses dinner). In the case there's an error... it fixes itself on its own (I've witnessed this miracle, my laptop wasn't switching on properly, I pressed shift, a screenshot asked me which version I wanted to restore, I clicked, and voilà, like new, no lost datas).
Oh, and what about those free softwares and plugins I mentioned before?
There's USC (Ubuntu Software Center), look for your keyword (from games to serious stuff(, click on the button of the software you choose and it's going to download and install it on it's own, because it's already suitable for your OS, it does it all on its own.
Oh, and if your pc is somewhat old and rusty, Ubuntu is going to restore it like new (I thought I had to say goodbye to some video drivers, to touchpad and to special keys... how hopless was I!)

4) It's good looking. The graphics are very light, and easy on the eyes... and most of all you can have jelly windows! Well, ok, this is just a plugin you may add if you want to.

5) It's compatible. Any software you may ever think of, be reassured that there is a suitable version or even a version expecially made for free software (GIMP, to name just one ;)). In the event you need a non-free software there are tons of ways to make it work anyway with no troubles at all (heck, you can make Windows work inside Ubuntu too!). And you don't even need to be high end nerds, you just need to know how to use google and whenever you find yourselves in trouble (very hard if you use your computer for ordinary stuff) just google your problem (I've learnt this way to use the command line ^_^).

6) It's the first. Anything you may have seen around, therefore anything you may come up to me and say like "that graphics, that cubic desktop, that other thing there, I've seen it on this and that OS"... true... NOW you've seen it. Linux & co have been doing it since at least 10 year, and I think this is a pretty good average.
And one version of Linux's kernel was the base for Mac OS (so in theory it shouldn't have been sold... but whatever, let's not argue!).

7) It's healthy. It means it will never have viruses. How comes? Since it's free nobody will ever bother to create viruses so that you'll need to pay for an antivirus: if you ever get something strange on your pc the solution, like an antivirus, will always be free. Marvellous, isn't it?

Well, to quote an italian comedian very badly: what else has Ubuntu to do for you? Clean up your house?

PS
I've been using Ubuntu for almost a year now, and still sometimes I find new and amazing things. PC and OS haven't slown down a little, nor any kind of troubles at all. Ok, my PC needs are quite basic and daily, work and play stuff. But Mr. Faun uses it (along with a lot of good professional free softwares) to record, edit and mix songs he&band write and play... not exaclty like taping stuff with a Lego recorder, is it? :D
From all this positive promotion I'm not earning a single buck, because Ubuntu is free! I'll tell you more, I'm thinking about donating to the developers.

7 buoni motivi per scegliere Ubuntu (Linux per esseri umani)

img per cortesia di google images

Perché passare all'informatica libera?

ADESSO l'avete visto.

Meraviglioso, no?

Insomma, per citare Guzzanti in modo molto barbaro e maldestro: cosa deve fare ancora Ubuntu? Spazzarvi per terra?

PS

Persona

Person, from the greek "persona" means mask.
Actors needed it to show and explain their character to the audience.
Shakespeare said that the world is a stage.
And still today we say not to judge a book by its cover (actually in italian this works better: we say that a suit doesn't tell the monk, but actually in middle ages monks were distinguished among themselves because of what they wore).

Anyway, were am I pointing to with all these premises? To a fundamental distinction, but also to a useful mix, and since these riddley intros are no use, I'll get to the point.

You can have a fantastic, amazing style, as detailed as flemish paintings... but be as interesting as a linoleum tile.
Or you can wear your usual jeans and tshirt, but be flamboyant, the most interesting person ever.
I don't think it's useful to stress on appearance if substance is null, I know it sounds strange after a plethora of posts about how to find your own style... but let me take you back to teenage years, for a moment, those years when everyone could be labeled with but a look at their shoes or bag: "She's wearing All Stars, she's a punkrocker" "He's wearing a bomber, he's a gabber" "She has a studded belt, she's a goth" "He's got an Iron Maiden's patch on his backpack, he's a metalhead". Finding a subculture and fitting in is perfectly normal, it's a need to belong to somewhere/something, and it's part of the individuation process. I confess I always had a tiny bit of envy for those who could relate 100% to a "type", to me it looked like they had no more need to question themselves, like they finally felt at ease and well accepted.
Then you grow up.
Some get stuck there, some look like they're moving forward, but they're always stuck, and there are those who "evolve" by trying, experimenting. Actually by having a personality (indeed)... we're not just a label, a pair of shoes or a favourite band, but this is old news... I hope ;)

Enough with memorabilias, it's 2011 and you're standing before your open wardrobe wondering "What can I wear today?".
Again, if you have nothing to say I highly doubt that a jacket will do the talking for you, but! Since you're hanging here I know you are an interesting person (I KNOW it, I don't hang out with linoleum tiles, ok?), so we can call in that "useful mix" I mentioned before.

Have you ever felt like you were wearing a knight armour all day long? Or one of those moments while you're walking down the street, Rammstein start playing in your ears and you feel like you could smash things just by walking through them? And then some days where you would have liked to feel so powerful and invulnerable, but in the end it was only -lonely- you?
Ok, this is why I've written all this stuff till now, because of these moments where you would need a shiny armour to walk up to your boss and ask for a raise, or to face a teacher making him believe you're fully prepared... and stuff like this.
Once I thought it meant to be double faced, never genuine... but then I've realized that I don't talk to my mother the same way I talk to my friends, that everyday we wear multiple masks, depending on the occasion. So it definately worths the while to use this at our own advantage!

Apparently, the majority of showbiz people have a lucky charm (best match unwashed underwear, grandma's little wooden giraffe, saying "s**t
s**t s**t" all together, something green, a jinxy gesture), so why not apply this to a smaller scale, daily?
I'm not suggesting you to turn scaramantic, listen: you don't need me to tell you that most of the time we dress accordingly to our mood, now let's try and do the opposite: let's try to influence our mood thanx to what we wear.

Choose your mask, you're character's costume, and step onstage.

Hey, Shakespear wasn't stupid.

Persona

21days n°7 - Pronoia, Rob Brezsny

img by Google

I bought it last summer on Amazon, used, it was very cheap, and it arrived in little more than a week.
It took me a bit more to read it all... and at first I wasn't happy with the purchase. Let's say this: I couldn't care less about all the euphorical and under-drugs-effect autobiographic tales by Rob.
So at the third page of those tales I gave them up, but I continued with the rest.
By the time I finished the book I had reconsidered my first opinion (of course I've skipped all the autobiographical stuff, and to be a book that has also an ecofriendly message there are waaaaay to many blank pages, and I mean pure white -not even recycled- paper... but let's move on).
I have to say that the "Pronoia News Network" pages alone are worth the book (and if you can find it used, that's better!). Such a lengthy and abundant collection of random interesting and positive facts was completely new tome.
Anyway every time you have to close the book you feel happier and with a better mindset towards the world. And sometimes I felt like I was reading exaclty the right paragraph I needed in that moment.
The final impulse was to cut up the book in many sentences to pick up random in the morning... and it's not an idea to discard :P

Anyway, why 21 days challenge here? Well, first of all finishing the book, it's pretty thick, and with all those funny pictures it catched a good deal of interest on the train (also because it's not exactly a paperback).
And here and there you can find exercises and "compositions" and questions.
I've selected just some of them (I'm sorry, but regardless of how much I'd like to re-evaluate sad and rusty areas, I won't be dancing in the middle of a road in a badly renown part of the town, at midnight... I'm sorry), and I've done my homeworks.
If I had absolutely no idea of where to start from to have a positive mindset, this is a very good starting point... I'll be guilty of hybris, but I think I've already asked myself a bit of everything, so finding new stuff it's becoming hard. Of course it's likely I've picked out the worst exercises for me.

Well, the final review is still a bit swinging... but if you find it on sale or used I'd say it's worth reading, again "Pronoia News Network" and some other thoughts scattered through the book are worth the effort. Oh and a last advice given from Rob himself and then applied by yours truly to the book itself: don't trust anything, trust only 80% of anything people tells you, put it in a doubtful position, maybe to find confirmation about it later, but at least it will be you the one verifying and you won't be fed any dogmas ;).

Musa's box

img by google

Yay for Italy! Happy 150° Union anniversary! My father hung our banner out on the balcony :)
Or happy St. Patrick's day to the others... I think we can all celebrate together with a beer!
I'll explain again how this Musa's Box works: it's nothing more than a gratefulness list, like many others on the net (been around for a while now). Once a week you'll write down things you're grateful for, things you loved or that made you smile, during the past week.
They don't need to be big things, on the contrary, very often it's the small things that make the difference. May I give you two advices? Try to find one good thing per day (so try to come up with a list of at least seven items, if one day has nothing another one can borrow it something) and take notes everyday.
Purpose and effects of these lists is to lift your mood, positive thinking and in the long run life's quality: if everyday you focus on good things, in your mind there will be less time and space to think to bad stuff. Trust me it works!
And it's fun, after a few weeks you'll find yourselves thinking "Cool! This one goes in my list!" :D

° Annie Leibowits and her Disney pictures
° coming back into a warm, quiet home with dry clothes
° baking a lllllot of cookies in a bunny shape (I called them "cuniculus aedibilis", edible bunnies)
° such a strong inspiration that's actually hammering in my head and it hurts!
° seeing Mr Faun playing onstage again, and having a great time, and feeling again the "musician-effect" (I'll talk to you about this one day)
° birds chirping at 7pm, because it's not cold anymore outside
° sunday afternoon spent "modeling": fairy makeup, cookies, ginger, laughs with ladies and beautifullllllllll tshirts! Stella hand-paints them all... I bought two! (this one and this one... and yes, you get to see my face!)
° trying mineral makeup: my beauty is slowly going green, so I've tried mineral, ecobiological, green, ecofriendly, vegan, oh well... just "good" makeup for the first time... I'm impressed! I forgot I was wearing makeup, my skin felt like naked... but I was wearing a full fairy makeup (see Stella's etsy shop :P)
° four big furry cats, one with huge blue eyes, they looked like glass marbles
° being with inspired and positive people
° waking up a monday morning with the best mood
° cleansing my face
° exercising, paining and sweating... but then feeling glimmering with endorphines
° the giveaway necklace that went alllll the way to Canada safe and sound, and look how good it looks on Gina :D
° this article on "L'Espresso" an italian newspaper, you don't need the words, just look at the pictures, they're comparing famous pictures to neurons and "pictures" of mind processes
° Everybody wants kung-fu fighting
° Dream On
° posing for a painting (well, my hair will)
° having a lot of things to do in mind but not being stressed by them, instead I feel full of energy
° theatre classes, I'm loving it every day more, and I also like the group we're building
° my orchid, it's pulling a new supergreen leaf... and all my plants, we're counting four now in my bedroom: orchid, african violet, pothos and dracena (lucky bamboo)... I'm enjoying all this green!
° a different thursday morning
° mythological creatures

Scatola Musa

img thanx to google

Viva l'Italia!
E poi è divertente, tempo qualche settimana e vi troverete a pensare "Belliiiiissimo! Questo finisce nella listina!" :D

° Everybody wants kung-fu fighting
° Dream On

Sewing and Shopping

How do you link needle&thread to shopping, you may be wondering...
Can you picture to yourself that sweater you left in the store, during the last sales, because it had that horrible flower applied on it? Or that cute skirt that could have been perfect if it was just a tad shorter? Or that tshirt that would fit you so well if it was a little more tight?
Or yet, that jacket that's rooting in your closet, since you're not using it at all, just because the lining has some stitches off? Or your perfect jeans, that lie there without button, or the shirt that has lost a couple of sequins?

Threading a needle isn't only for grandmas, I can grant it. Nor I'm saying you should become a taylor/seamstress with a huge lab, experts in pattern making or stylists-to-be, if you're not interested into it.
But can you figure the freedom it gives you while shopping (during sales, at markets, in thriftshops), you'll be able to look at the stuff displayed with new eyes, with possibility.
I'd say you need to know just three things: sewing a straight line (by hand or by machine), hemming, attaching a button. Really, for all those modifications, this is enough.

I don't sew a lot, nor on a constant basis. I learned out of "desperation" because I had enough not finding stuff like I really wanted it to be, and I couldn't stress my grandma so much each carnival or halloween. I've sewn from pillows to bags, from waist chinchers to sweatshirts (with rat ears)... just one note from my experience: follow the instructions religiously. If instructions say to sew a waistband... for pete's sake do it!!!

Plus, can you feel the awesome in saying "I did it myself!"?

So, next time you'll go shopping, consider shapes, cuts, colours, fabrics and so on, carry with you your "personal style list", and put a little effort in it.
I've already mentioned a little daily effort, to introduce new stuff into an old habit, and most of all you have to remember this while shopping... otherwise you'll get back home with the 5th black jumper to add to your collection...
If you're fancying something peculiar, instead of saying "oh whatever, I don't know what to wear it with" and put it back on the racks, really think about it: would that colour fit with anyone of your colours? Can that cut work in with your shapes? Can you take this ruche off without damaging the dress? Can you add a button here?

Little daily efforts ;)

Taglio, cucito e guida all'acquisto

Piccoli esercizi quotidiani ;)

Define Your Style

Have you done your homeworks?
Have you made up your mind about why you want to change style, what you want it to say, which items from your closet you want to save and which ones to toss?
Maybe it was a little too complex, wasn't it?

So today I'm going to give you a lot of small exercises, to clear up your ideas! Better, I'll have you write down a lot of lists, yayyy!!!
We'll start from the things you want to toss, from those things you don't want to wear anymore, and shift them into things you do want to wear: no more turtle necks? Then we have V necks, or boat necks or whatever! You may also want to keep in mind a couple of tricks from the shapes post.

Colours: enlightened by the post about colours and by your personal taste, list all your favourite ones, picking them among the ones that suit you best, among your favourites and among those that will match well with your favourites.

Inspirations: you can go nuts here, you can register on pininterest, open a folder on your pc, cut out pictures from magazines, make an inspiration board on your wall. Whatever. But basically it's about looking for pictures of people (flickr, lookbook, weheartit) and characters (from the movies, or just famous people) and things that inspire you, that mirror you, that have that "something" that you'd like for yourselves too. Collect a lot of pictures and bathe your eyes in your collection for a while.

Determine your own style: finally we're here! We did it! We're finally dealing with what you'd have liked to hear from the beginning of this post serie! I've found this exercise here, and even though it's from interior design I think it applies wonderfully to personal style too (and also to any field where personal style is required).
Make a long -very long- list of words, terms and adjectives of how you see your style now, how you want your style to be, what you want it to say, and simply words that are meaningful to you: if "windy" for you is ok, just use it!
Then look for those words that resemble eachother, and choose only one. Repeat this untill you're left with a few words. Max five, ideally two.
The result will probably be something embarassing, completely meaningless to an external observer. Pixie pois? Labyrinthic tea? Allegretto con brio? Mechanic melancholy? Windy vitamins? Anything that's fine with you, will be (guess what's coming?) fine! (indeed).

More: make a small daily commitment. Put a little effort everyday, it's more about subtraction, than shopping: hit the very core of the matter. Some say to look for at least three different ways to wear a garment, others say to take pictures of every single combo you can come up with from your closet (shoes and earrings included). To me, you could also loose your mind in it and take a picture of every single piece you own, create a database and match them with your pc, or draw all your looks, or anything. I like the improvisation a little more, I like to surprise myself :P.

Take inspiration: you have your lists, you have your picture collection, you have your record of successfull looks... what do I do to be able to recreate them without hoping in fate? Being inspired is both something spontaneous and internal, and something that requires some scheming. You reduce your sources to the bone, you deconstruct them to the very detail and you reconstruct them following different cathegories: colour, texture, shape and sensorial suggestions (touch, smell, sound). Let's say you came up with Windy Vitamins. What does these words stand for? What do they bring up in your imagination? To me strong vivid colours, polished and shiny surfaces, natural fibers and floaty fabrics, tinkering sounds, smiles, big chubby bags, picnics in the woods, during summer, with fruit juices. Do you see what I mean?

Hysteria: last but not least, and this referrs to aaaaaaaaall this "style guide". Don't go really nuts. It's pointless, it's wrinkle inducing and looks bad with new shoes.
No, seriously, it's useless: having your own style should be something fun, something that pleases you, after a while it should also come naturally to you. It's built a little at a time, it grows and evolves with you, and again, it should be fun. You're not looking for physical laws that make the universe go around, you can change your mind tomorrow, next month, in a century, every five minutes.

So you can, no, you have to take all my word, put them on the scale of doubt, see what works for you and what doesn't, feel free to chuck it all into the garbage and do it all again from your own ideas (and this would mean you have a very clear idea of your style ;))
Got it? Have fun with it!

Definire Uno Stile

Fatti i compiti dell'altra volta?

Capito? Divertirsi!

International Women's Day

To those pissed off if they don't receive any mimosa (it smells, and stains around by the way), to those who think that it's finally time to folly around, to those who think that equal rights of men and women is to be able to go guilt free to a male stripteas, to those who think that it's only today that you have to honour your mom, sisters, friends and girlfriends, to those who think that it's just a meaningless commercial occasion, to those who speculate on it with withering, pale, small flowers way too pricy, to those who organize parties that are shameful (to say the least), to those who think that emancipation means finally having permission to go out with friends, in a word, to all those who have a completely wrong idea of why we celebrate the International Women's Day.

Wikipedia tells you briefly: "It is a major day of global celebration of women [...] of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements." And to remember discriminations and violences they're still object of these days (my translation added from the italian page).

Why the mimosa? Because it's one of the first flowers you find plenty of in these days, and because the urban legend says that it was blooming outside the factory (american? german? russian? it's legend) where hundreds of women died in a fire (they were forced to work that day, locked up inside, forced to work in slavery-like conditions).

Wikipedia, once again, tells you everything. And google has a nice page with a nice project.

Why do I care so much? Why to I fire up so much? Because if we want to nit pick and go all philosophical, "women" are the biggest cultural minority, take any culture and population, women always have an inferior role or status. Because it's 2011 and if you take a job interview in the super civilized Europe, in the super civilized Italy, they ask you if you have a fiancée, how long has it been, if you're serious, and if you want to get married and if you want a family.
Because there still is who thinks that women's sole function is to find a small job and then think about having brats (having a career? Eresy!!! You don't want children? Egoist!!!), because there is still who believe that your happiness rhimes with the perfect softener, that your life purpose is split yourself between pans and ironing board... Or between tights and thongs...
Because if you have University degree, you're 25 years old and you're still home with your parents (because there's no work, because when there is it's plain exploitation... we're near being asked to pay the employer to be able to work, because when and if they look for someone to employ they want him/her young and experienced... but if anyone is willing to offer you experience, that's going to be hard... maybe we'll talk about this another time) you're a mummy's boy/ daddy's girl, and you'd better look for an old, sick, rich man to make your living...

I'm not buying it, I'm celebrating 8 march, without mimosa, because I want dignity.
